Constantine started her writing career with her first publication in 1987 titled The Enchantment of Flesh and Spirits.

She explained the reason for this pseudonymous and eventual legal name change in an interview:
I feel that as people grow up, they don’t always fit the names they’ve been given by their parents. So I decided quite early on that I wanted a different name.
Constantine became well-known for her Wraeththu series. She was also well-known for her gothic aesthetic, both in her writing and in her own daily life. She would eventually open her own press called Immanion Press.
